As an integral part of the Operations Team, the Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for the maintenance and preventative maintenance of equipment to ensure the viable operation of the plant. The Maintenance Superintendent provides strong leadership in planning plant maintenance activities to achieve the plant reliability targets in a safe and cost effective manner. The Maintenance Superintendent plans project needs for major turnarounds, schedules and coordinates activities for preventative maintenance of all plant assets, and collaborates with the Plant Manager in overseeing maintenance staff and contractors assigned to designated projects.
Overview
The sawmill maintenance superintendent will oversee all aspects of the sawmill maintenance department.
- Responsible to ensure the highest quality standards are met with regards to the safety of all maintenance employees
- Ensure all policies, procedures, practices, and regulations are followed and that the systems in place are tracked and audited to ensure compliance
- Manage and identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce cost, and maximize the quality, value, and recovery of lumber being produced
- Lead by example to engage maintenance workers, meet targets and expectations, and address mechanical deficiencies
- Foster a culture of open and respectful communication by engaging and supporting team members to achieve excellence in all areas of the business
- Encourage a business sense of family among maintenance, electrical, and production staff and employees, ensuring there are no barriers between departments
- Build a team through a training system that encourages and supports maintenance staff and employees to build knowledge, growth, and to keep pace with new technologies; further ensuring these skills are passed on and down within the work force
SAFETY
- Ensure maintenance supervisors conduct weekly safety meetings based on the topic provided: deliver a clear message, engage the crew, answer questions, and follow up where required.
- Track and report on safety tours and observations, including lock out verifications, of the maintenance department supervisors
- Assist all teams to ensure all incidents, including near misses, are fully investigated within 24 hours.
- Perform regular PMs on equipment ensuring all guards are in place, in good condition, and equipment is not run in an unsafe condition
- Ensure all maintenance employees are trained in all aspects of their job including the safe use of tools and equipment (fall protection, hose press, Hiab, man lift, zoom boom, etc)
- Ensure all maintenance employee JSAs are completed by their supervisor and revisions are made to the JSA document as required
QUALITY
- Ensure all completed PMs are followed up on, and randomly checked, to ensure the PMs are effective in capturing machine deficiencies and provide feedback to employees
- Ensure a well-known standard for machine delivery expectations including: barking quality, miss manufacture, and uptime
- Ensure machines deliver the desired chip size. Review and share quality control audits with maintenance supervisors and personnel.
- Ensure completed work is done to the desired specifications and rework is tracked.
COST
- Meet maintenance financial standards by preparing, filing, and reporting annual budget information
- Track all spending related to the maintenance department and its personnel
- Ensure the business plan is followed and targets are met, following through with changes as necessary
- Track all downtime events related to mechanical and electrical failures, complete a root cause on events greater than one hour
- Control costs by ensuring that only necessary parts are purchased and then installed upon arrival.
- Improve function and reliability of plant systems and equipment by studying performance results and identifying, recommending, and implementing changes and expansions
- Review stores inventory to ensure adequate min/max levels to support equipment upkeep.

- Solid understanding and knowledge of optimization equipment and processes

Qualifications
SKILLS
Preference will be given to those holding a Millwright, electrical or related red seal Trade Certification or engineering degree in related field |
