Forestry Assistant

Conifex Timber Inc.
  • Mackenzie

Description

If you are an early-career forestry professional with a passion for safety, field operations, and learning all aspects of forest management, we want you to join our Fibre Team as a Forestry Assistant. You will play an important role in supporting Conifex’s harvesting, silviculture, and planning programs through a combination of field work and office support.

As a Forestry Assistant, you will support the operational delivery of Conifex's harvesting program while gaining exposure to planning and silviculture activities. This is a hands on role that combines field based operational work with office coordination and data management.

You will spend a good part of your time in the bush, working alongside our harvesting crews and contractors on things like log quality, road construction inspections, harvest block inspections, and environmental compliance. The rest of your time will be spent in the office, helping with harvest plan prep and data entry that keeps our operations running on schedule.

This role is built for someone who wants to learn the full picture of forest management, not just one piece of it. You will work closely with our Harvesting, Planning, and Silviculture teams, picking up skills in cutblock and road layout, riparian assessments, contractor compliance, quality, and production, and regeneration surveys along the way. Depending on your interests, there is also room to get exposure to purchase wood and biomass operations.

We are looking for someone relatively early in their forestry career who wants to grow. You will get direct mentorship from experienced Superintendents and Supervisors, and a real say in which parts of the operation you want to specialize in as you build your career with us.

Duties

  • Gain exposure to harvesting, biomass, planning, and silviculture operations both in the field and in the office.
  • Participate in operational inspections, contractor compliance checks, and field monitoring activities to support safe and efficient forestry operations that meet environmental standards.
  • Support cutblock and road layout, reconnaissance, wildlife and riparian assessments, and operational planning activities.
  • Support the preparation of harvest plans, permit submissions, and operational documentation.
  • Assist with silviculture program implementation including planting, brushing, and regeneration surveys.

Qualifications

  • Education: A University Degree or Technical Diploma in Forestry or Natural Resource Management. Candidates who are RPF, RFT, or eligible for registration with the Forest Professionals of British Columbia are preferred.
  • Experience: Forestry experience in areas such as harvesting, cruising, planning, or silviculture is considered an asset. Candidates with 2+ years of forestry experience are preferred, although applicants with less experience who demonstrate strong potential are encouraged to apply.
  • strong work ethic and love of the outdoors—this is a role where you’ll be working on the ground and in the forest.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Computer skills and an aptitude for forestry-based technologies would be considered an asset.

Benefits

  • Team Environment: A supportive and inclusive team environment.
  • Health Benefits: Comprehensive coverage including an annual health spending account.
  • Excellent Pension Plan: Secure your future with our robust pension offering.
  • Career Development: We invest in you - opportunities for professional development and career growth.
